Our History on the RiverNew Smyrna Beach was settled in 1768 by Dr. Andrew Turnbull as the site of the largest 18th-century colonial endeavor in what is now the United States. At the same time, canals were dug for irrigation, drainage and transport—flat-bottomed boats once glided up and down the waterway now known as Canal Street, carrying sugar and indigo to market. By 1920 the town’s population had grown to almost 2,500, and Canal Street had naturally become the focal point of a thriving business district; much of the architecture that lines the street today dates to the early 1900s. |
Our Mission & ActivitiesAs a membership based business association, we exist to promote local businesses and preserve the historic character of Canal Street and its surrounding neighborhood. We organize signature monthly and annual events—such as the Art & Artisan Stroll, Gallery Walk, Classic Cars On Canal and festive parades—to drive foot traffic and cultivate a neighborly environment. In collaboration with partners like Southeast Volusia Visitor's Bureau and The City of New Smyrna Beach, we develop marketing initiatives, wayfinding maps and visitor resources that ensure Canal Street remains a destination for shopping, dining, arts and culture. |
