Where did the name for Canal Street come from? Well we can Thank Dr. Andrew Turnbull and his excellent knowledge of Egyptian Irrigation Methods. The drainage and irrigation systems dug by our colonists in Historic Downtown allowed for nearly 3000 acres of Agricultural land. The Canal has since been covered on Canal St. but other portions can be found off Myrtle Ave. Take a trip to the past and see if you can spot any of the original canal system.
